Protect Yourself From The Flu In The Spring

Thankfully The Walkers were spared this flu season (with no flu shots!) but that doesn’t mean we still can’t catch it. The most deadly flu season in a decade may be over here in Texas but the flu is still floating around and people are still getting sick. I give myself a shot every week for my psoriasis, I’m not down for an extra one that I don’t believe will help me.

My Beef With The Flu Shot

Anyone else notice that most people who got the flu shot this season actually got the flu? I felt like everyone I spoke to, who got the shot, ended up sick, like wtf?! I, like almost everyone else in America grew up getting the flu shot, because the doctor said to. However I quit getting it a few years ago and don’t plan on getting it again. Not to mention the ingredients are pretty sketchy, and some have been linked to cancer. Egg protein, formaldehyde, MSG, antibiotics, and polysorbate 80.

Why The Flu Shot Isn’t Working

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) says the vaccine effectiveness can vary and that the vaccine will lessen the rick for 40-60% of people who receive it. Basically you have to match exactly which strand of the flu is in the vaccine. The CDC says, “During years when the flu vaccine is not well matched to circulating influenza viruses, it is possible that no benefit from flu vaccination may be observed.” And, “flu vaccines provide better protection against influenza B or influenza A (H1N1) viruses than against influenza A (H3N2) viruses.”

How To Safely Protect Yourself

SUPPLEMENTS SUPPLEMENTS SUPPLEMENTS! We are big supplement takers here in the Walker house! No matter how healthy we eat, there is no way we can get everything we need to keep our immune systems up and healthy during this crazy flu season. Just make sure you are getting a high quality supplement and not ones filled with synthetic ingredients.

Immune Booting Supplements

Multivitamin – I love Pure Encapsulations because I know I can trust the ingredients. All of their supplements are hypoallergenic, and free of wheat, gluten, egg, peanuts, magnesium stearate, hydrogenated fat, artificial sweeteners and colors, and other unnecessary excipients.

Probioticsare live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of these as germs that cause diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.

Elderberry, Vitamin c, and Zinc –
This gummy is a trifecta, with Elderberry, Vitamin C and Zinc! All which have proven to help prevent the flu and cold. Zinc is an immune boosting mineral found in oysters, beef, and lamb, and to a lesser degree in pumpkin seeds, cashews, and beans. Health benefits of the elder plant include naturally improving colds, the flu, sinus issues, nerve pain, inflammation, chronic fatigue, allergies, constipation and even cancer. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is necessary for the growth, development and repair of all body tissues. It’s involved in many body functions, including formation of collagen, absorption of iron, the immune system, wound healing, and the maintenance of cartilage, bones, and teeth.

Neil Med Sinus Rinse sinus rinsing won’t eliminate colds or sinusitis infections, medical research indicates that it will reduce their frequency, duration and intensity of symptoms.  (Safe for kiddos too! My little one does a rinse about 4-5 times a week! )

Prevention Is Key

In addition to the immune boosting supplements, there are many ways to prevent the flu. Like regularly washing your hands, sanitizing your school, or work space, getting a good nights sleep, staying hydrated, eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

What To Do If You Catch The Flu

Umcka – also known as Umckaloabo is an herbal extract that has been shown to work against colds, flu, sinusitis, tonsillitis and antibiotic-resistant ear infections. It has shown both antiviral and antibiotic properties in killing both viruses and bacterial infections.

Echinacea – acts as an anti-inflammatory, which can help reduce bronchial symptoms of cold and flu. Echinacea can help your body fight off infections, but it is best to take it at the first sign of illness. You can take this as a preventative as well as a remedy.

Ginger Tea w/ Honey & Turmeric – This herbal concoction will further help fight the infection and reduce inflammation, providing relief from a sore throat.

Sleep Sleep Sleep – Sleeping lets your body direct nearly all its resources to your immune system—both in trying to avoid an infection and in healing if you do develop one.

Stay Hydrated – Adequate hydration is the key to flushing out the virus from your system. Fluid helps your body to flush bacteria and viruses from your system. Drink approximately half your body weight in ounces daily of water.

What About The Kiddos?

All of these preventive actions and remedies are safe for kids, in lower doses. I give my little one all of the following supplements and we’ve had a flu-free season!
